Climate Change and Human Rights

UN Global Compact Network Australia | October 5, 2020

The Global Compact Network Australia invites you to watch a discussion on Climate Change and Human Rights with Fiona Reynolds, CEO of Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and Robert Vaughan, Human Rights Officer, United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner.

Businesses are a critical actor for the world to achieve net-zero by 2050. Whilst many businesses have traditionally approached climate change as an environmental, economic and risk issue, more recently the broader societal and human rights implications of climate change are gaining attention.

Climate-related events such as Australia’s ‘Black Summer’, record flooding and rainfall in Brazil, record cyclones in the Pacific, prolonged heatwaves in the UK and the locust plagues in east Africa are demonstrative of not only of the environmental consequences of climate change, but of the human dimension of climate change: from the loss of homes leading to widespread displacement; the loss of livestock and key agricultural crops; the increased risks to disease; and, most importantly, the loss of human life.

To address this increasingly relevant topic, and hear about the role that business can play, we invite you to watch the conversation and explore the following key areas:

  • The human rights dimension to climate change: what this means for businesses in our region
  • Integrating the human rights lens to climate risk and why this matters for investors
  • Human rights, climate change and displacement: what role should businesses play?
