Event Details

The Global Compact Network Australia in partnership with the WWF invites you to join us for our first 101 webinar on Science Based Targets (SBT).

The SBT Initiative is a global program and its goal is simple: to limit global warming to no more than 2 degrees Celsius /1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with the United Nations’ Paris Agreement on climate change. In essence, it helps businesses set a clear pathway to transition towards a zero-carbon economy.

SBT is a joint initiative by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UN Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF that raises the ambition of corporate mitigation efforts to ensure that greenhouse gas reduction targets are set at a rate that will reduce global temperature rise to less than 2 degrees Celsius, by providing specifically developed requirements for each industry and by helping to share innovative approaches. In Australia, the Global Compact Network Australia (GCNA) and WWF run an SBT Community of Practice that assists Australian companies with committing to, and setting, a SBT.

Internationally, over 500 companies have either set or committed to setting targets under this Initiative.  Since launching the Initiative, two companies each week have joined, including Origin, Dell, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Wal-Mart, Tesco, Procter & Gamble, Sony, Nestlé, Unilever, the Kellogg Company, Pfizer Company, AbInBev, Thalys, Komatsu, Tetra Pak, Walmart and Optus Singtel.

The ‘101’ webinar is particularly relevant for organisations just getting started with science-based targets. The session will provide an overview of the SBT Initiative, how it has been received globally, the process of committing to a SBT, and how Australian businesses are responding.

Speakers:

  • Cynthia Cummis, Director Private Sector Climate Mitigation, WRI
  • Monica Richter, Senior Manager, Low Carbon Futures, WWF
  • Sasha Courville, Director, Global Compact Network Australia
  • Corinne Schoch, Senior Adviser, Global Compact Network Australia

Community of Practice:

Beginning 2019, the Global Compact Network Australia in partnership with WWF will be working to support the take up of Science Based Target setting by Australian companies. We will be co-hosting the quarterly Community of Practice events. This 101 Webinar forms the first activity for 2019.
