Event Details

The Global Compact Network Australia is hosting an introductory webinar on the interplay of business and human rights standards globally.

The UN Global Compact’s human rights principles (Principles 1 and 2) are derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They are also consistent with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises (OECD Guidelines). Other business and human rights standards abound, both sector specific and more general in nature. All of these standards have a role to play but companies can and do get confused by how all of these standards work together and which standards they should be prioritising.

Lead by Vanessa Zimmerman, Director, GCNA and Chair, GCNA Human Rights, this webinar will introduce the key global business and human rights standards and explain how they inter-relate. In addition to the UN Global Compact these will include the UNGPs, the OECD Guidelines, the International Finance Corporation’s Environmental and Social Performance Standards, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), key ILO instruments and beyond.

Participants will be provided with an outline of these standards and guidance on how to unpack this ‘spaghetti soup’ of international business and human rights standards. Interested participants should be aware that this is not a webinar diving into the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights though they will be outlined including how key concepts are replicated in other core business and human rights standards. Participants will also understand how these standards are being incorporated into policy and legislative developments, including the requirements of the new Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act and its associated Guidance.

This webinar will explore:

  • Key human rights norms and standards applicable to business, including the UNGPs, OECD Guidelines, SDGs and beyond
  • How these standards work together
  • Which external stakeholders tend to use particular standards
  • Guidance for how to prioritise your company’s implementation of /work with these standards

The training session will be followed by participant Q&A.

Registrations: Registrations open on Monday, 24 June. You can register here.

This webinar in free for GCNA members. Non-GCNA members are charged a nominal fee to cover our costs.
