Development of follow-up and review framework to track the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs underway
UN Global Compact Network Australia | January 25, 2016
In September 2015, World Leaders adopted the ambitious global agenda – Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – underpinned by 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the overarching objective to eradicate poverty and promote prosperity.
To ensure the objectives of the 2030 Agenda are met, governments have emphasised the importance of developing a ‘robust, voluntary, effective, participatory, transparent and integrated follow-up and review framework’, which will contribute to the implementation of the SDGs. The purpose of the review framework will be to guide State-led review processes, in order to identify the challenges of implementing the SDGs, and what additional resources could progress the 2030 Agenda.
The 2030 Agenda will be steered by the recommendations of the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) – the central platform for the review of the 2030 Agenda – which will be informed by State-led reviews. The HLPF will collate the review findings and ensure the SDGs remain relevant over the next 15 years. The follow-up and review framework is currently being developed and more details will be provided at first HLPF meeting (11 – 22 July 2016).
Companies are encouraged to support the implementation of the SDGs by aligning their review processes with the 2030 Agenda. Business, civil society, academia and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to feed into state-led reviews and voluntary reporting models, as well as contribute to the HLPF.
Businesses can contribute to the review process and advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs in a number of ways, including by:
- Announcing voluntary commitments to the SDGs
- Engaging in multi-stakeholder dialogues to identify challenges and solutions
- Collaborating and partnering on comparable reviews to inform the HLPF
- Engaging with review processes through voluntary reporting initiatives
- Responding to calls for evidence and case studies
- Organising and participating in business engagement platforms around and during the HLPF to tie in with the official event
The UN Global Compact is the leading platform to support business engagement in these ways, and we encourage you to get involved with our activities locally and globally.
