Security and Human Rights Workshop

Event Details

The Global Compact Network Australia, in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, will convene an invitation-only workshop on security and human rights – the third Security and Human Rights Community of Practice meeting hosted in Australia.

Ensuring respect for human rights in providing or managing site security continues to be a critical challenge for extractives companies. While the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPs) provide valuable guidance, implementation is not always straightforward.

Building on workshops convened by the GCNA in 2014 and 2015, this workshop will provide an opportunity for senior security practitioners and their community relations colleagues to explore and discuss:

  • the security and human rights-related risks and challenges facing Australian extractives businesses operating in overseas jurisdictions;
  • how companies can identify these risks and challenges and best practices in managing them;
  • how companies can effectively engage with host governments around security issues;
  • how Australian Government agencies can better support Australian extractives businesses in understanding and managing security and human rights-related risks and challenges and responding when issues arise.

In addition to DFAT, we are inviting a range of other Australian Government departments and agencies to join the workshop to share knowledge and build networks.

This workshop is strictly invitation only. It is aimed at senior security representatives from extractives companies, and their community / human rights colleagues. Participants will be limited to representatives from the extractives industry and security providers, together with the GCNA and Australian Government representatives.
