Joan Ko

Global Climate and Sustainability Leader, Arup

Joan Ko is Arup’s Global Climate and Sustainability Services Leader and a recognised expert in decarbonising cities and infrastructure. With over 20 years’ experience as an environmental engineer, Joan leads multidisciplinary teams that integrate design, economics, and environmental considerations to deliver practical pathways to net zero. Her work spans national policy, organisational strategy, and infrastructure investment, with a focus on translating global climate goals into local action.

Joan has directed major decarbonisation initiatives, including Australia’s lowest-cost pathways to net zero housing, precinct-scale carbon-neutral masterplans, and decarbonisation strategies for energy and transport assets. She has advised governments and industry on the circular economy and carbon governance, and authored policy papers for industry associations across transport, finance, and development. Joan also contributes to the broader sustainability agenda as Deputy Chair of the Victoria State Government’s Sustainability Fund, which invests in climate resilience and circular economy projects.
