In 2015, world leaders made a historic commitment to ensure the rights and well-being of all people on a thriving planet by adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Launched by the UN Global Compact Network Netherlands in 2020, the SDG Flag Day campaign has since grown into a global movement. In 2023, over 1,500 companies, embassies, NGOs, government institutions, and civil society organisations raised the SDG flag worldwide.
This year marks a key milestone as Australia joins this global movement to celebrate SDG Flag Day for the first time.
On 25 September, iconic Australian landmarks—including Melbourne Town Hall (Vic), Old Parliament House (ACT), the Treasury Building in Canberra (ACT), the John Gorton Building (ACT), and Questacon (ACT)—will light up with the colours of the SDGs. In addition, Hobart Town Hall (Tas), Sydney Town Hall (NSW) and Melbourne Town Hall (Vic) will fly the SDG flag, symbolising a national commitment to advancing the SDGs. This event is a powerful representation of our dedication to the SDGs and a call to action for securing a sustainable future for all Australians.
