Director’s Diary part 2 – Notes from the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Week
Kate Dundas | September 24, 2024
On Saturday 21 September, we were grateful to attend an event hosted by the Mindaroo Foundation at UN Headquarters focused on the impacts of lethal humidity – a term describing the growing threat to humanity posed by rising humidity and heat due to climate change.
The event marked the official launch of the Lethal Humidity Global Council (LHGC), convened by the Minderoo Foundation, on the eve of Climate Week. The LHGC is advancing research and modelling to help minimise loss of life and support the development of high-level policy solutions, with 10 new projects worth of AUD$6 million (US$4 million) research grants.
Panellists at the launch of the LHGC criticised the concept of net zero and the use of carbon credits, offsets and unproven technologies, such as carbon capture and storage, as a way to create the appearance of reduced emissions without meaningful changes to businesses practices.
Instead, the panellists unanimously called for the achievement of Real Zero, referring to the complete elimination of all greenhouse gas emissions from a business’ operations.
“Real Zero is far harder than Net Zero. But it is the only path that can prevent further escalation of climate impacts.” – Lethal Humidity Global Council.
The urgency of the matter was clear, with panellist Bill Hare, United Nations High-Level Expert Group Panellist on the Net-Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities, emphasising that if businesses do not commit to decarbonisation, we won’t succeed in this battle.
The private sector has a pivotal role to play. Businesses can do a great deal to provide the examples and interventions needed to encourage broader adoption of Real Zero targets.
