Professor Paul X. McCarthy

Professor Paul X. McCarthy is a leading expert in computational social science, CEO, and author. His book Online Gravity (Simon & Schuster) explains how technology is transforming economics, while his chapter on “Sustainability as Strategy” will be featured in Responsible Business (Emerald Publishing, December 2024). McCarthy co-leads the Science of Startups AI research lab at the University of Oxford, launched following a three-year collaboration with Australian universities. His influential paper in Nature’s Scientific Reports examines how founder personalities drive startup success, drawing on data from over 21,000 global startups.

McCarthy also advises governments on leveraging AI and natural language processing to analyse large-scale public submissions, such as for the NSW Floods Inquiry and the Australian Universities Accord. He is currently working with the United Nations to analyse sustainability reports from over 1,000 companies, driving AI-based insights into corporate sustainability worldwide.
