Event Details

The Global Compact Network Australia (GCNA) will convene an ‘in conversation’ with Shayne Elliott, CEO, ANZ and Karen Cain, CEO, Latrobe Valley Authority (LVA) to address the dimensions of a just transition framework and the pathways that will be required to reach a net zero economy.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has highlighted that COVID-19 has caused a plunge in energy demand ‘seven times greater than the global financial crisis’, impacting heavily on coal, oil and gas whilst renewable energy is proving so far to be more resilient (IEA, 2020). This is coupled with over 130 financial institutions globally announcing exit dates from financing, investing in or insuring thermal coal (IEEFA, 2020).

The GCNA’s newly released report – Just Transition: Implications for the Corporate Sector and Financial Institutions, highlights that the transition to a net zero economy should place decent work, quality jobs and communities at the heart of the agenda. However, conversations to date have tended to be far more transactional, placing emphasis on investments, policies, and infrastructure.

Well-planned clean energy pathways offer many opportunities. An ill-planned transition, however, carries the risk of negative impacts to communities, workers and businesses. Proactive engagement with capital, communities, business and authorities is required to prepare for structural change and adapt to new ways of working.

To address this increasingly relevant topic, this exclusive event to feature eminent leaders, Shayne Elliott and Karen Cain as they discuss the actions that are required to build a more inclusive and equitable future.

  • Karen Cain, CEO, Latrobe Valley Authority
  • Shayne Elliott, CEO, ANZ
