Ego Pharmaceuticals was founded in Melbourne in 1953 when a young chemist, Gerald Oppenheim, and his wife, Rae, a nurse, saw a need for products to restore and maintain healthy skin.

Since its inception almost 70 years ago, Ego has grown to become a world leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of innovative skincare products that are backed by science.

Today, Ego produces over 150 different products from brands including QV Skincare, SunSense Sunscreen, Aqium Hand Sanitiser and many more.

Ego’s mission is to transform lives through the science of healthy skin.

The business invests in organisations doing good work in skin health, partnering with the likes of Melanoma Institute Australia, Eczema Association Australasia and the Skin Health Institute to provide support that enables them to continue their vital research.

Ego exports to over 27 nations including the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Europe, but still remains a proudly Australian family owned and operated company, with all products manufactured in their own world-class plant in Melbourne.

Today, Gerald and Rae’s son, Alan Oppenheim, is Ego’s Managing Director and his wife, Dr Jane Oppenheim, is the Scientific and Operations Director.

The name ‘Ego’ is an acronym for Erwin and Gerald Oppenheim. Dr Erwin Oppenheim, Gerald’s father, was a dermatologist.

Ego Pharmaceuticals is also committed to being an exemplary sustainable organisation through the drive to minimise their impact on the natural world.

Ego has committed to the Victorian Government Take2 Pledge, setting goals across the organisation to take action on climate change. The business has implemented sustainable factors in all new building investments, including solar panels on all buildings, air handling to minimise air conditioning energy and more.

Ego also partners with the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation and REDcycle, and is a founding member of the ANZPAC Plastics Pact, committing to making packaging changes to improve reuse and recyclability and divert more waste from landfill.
