Executive Update: The Power of Principles in Uncertain Times

I am proud to work with companies at the United Nations Global Compact who operate in ways that, at a minimum, meet fundamental responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. These responsible businesses enact the same values and principles wherever they have a presence, and know that good practices in one area do not offset harm in another. During times of uncertainty and change, these same values and principles help leaders get their bearings and make the right decisions.
This weekend I’ve been touched and inspired by the courageous show of support by leaders from business, academia and civil society who have stood up for the human rights of refugees and migrants. By making public statements of support for their staff, stakeholders and customers, they are reflecting their core principles and values. And in addition, many are taking action for refugees and migrants: creating jobs, providing housing, donating in their support, and offering compensation for those who may not be able to return home to work.
These actions confirm my convictions that business is indeed a force for good.
As employers, investors, innovators and influencers, these leaders have both a stake and a role to play. The corporate responsibility to respect human rights includes the cross-cutting and internationally recognized principles of non-discrimination and equality.
At the same time, put simply, inclusion is good business. Harmony between people within and among communities supports an open global business environment and companies that value the diversity of their customers, employees, business partners and community stakeholders outperform their peers.
This movement of business as a force for good transcends borders, fences and walls. Now more than ever, this is a time to stay firm on our universal values and principles.
