Corporate Sustainability and Lawyers: Guide for General Counsel and Business for the Rule of Law framework launched

UN Global Compact Network Australia | June 30, 2015

The UN Global Compact has launched two publications – the Guide for General Counsel on Corporate Sustainability and Business for the Rule of Law Framework – which provide practical guidance to lawyers and others on the increasingly important role they can play in advising business to meet their corporate sustainability goals and responsibilities.

Speaking at the launch event in New York on 24 June, Alice Cope, GCNA Executive Manager noted that “lawyers are sometimes seen as putting the brakes on sustainability commitments and initiatives. However, there is an opportunity for lawyers to be champions and drivers of corporate sustainability, and we hope these publications will help sustainability practitioners start those conversations with their companies’ legal teams.”

The GCNA played a key role in ensuring Australian input into both documents, through interviews with a number of Australian General Counsels undertaken by Allens and the GCNA , and a Business for the Rule of Law consultation workshop convened by LexisNexis and the GCNA.
