VIDEO | Responding to potential instances of modern slavery safely

Chris Caskey | August 1, 2023

As part of the UN Global Compact Network Australia’s Modern Slavery Impact Initiative (MSII), we are releasing a series of short Bite-sized Learning videos unpacking key modern slavery risk issues and topics for Australian businesses.

In our seventh episode, Manager, Human Rights at the UNGCNA, Chris Caskey, spoke to Lina Garcia Daza – (A) Lead for Trafficking, Forced Labour and Forced Marriage and Natalie Maxwell-Davis – Senior Manager, Modern Slavery Prevention & Response at the Australian Red Cross to unpack how companies can respond to potential cases of modern slavery safely and effectively.

In this video, Lina and Natalie unpack the support services that are provided by the Australian Red Cross, and discuss the complexities at play when identifying, assessing and responding to potential instances of modern slavery. In particular, Lina and Natalie highlight that modern slavery can manifest in many different ways, and as such, there no one-size-fits-all approach. In setting themselves up to respond safely and effectively, companies should look to include workers within the business and the supply chain in the design of any grievance mechanisms and remediation pathways, and work to create an accessible and safe environment built on trust.

This content was funded by the Australian Government through the National Community Crime Prevention Program: Modern Slavery Grant opportunity. The views expressed in this video are the presenter’s alone and are not necessarily the views of the Australian Government.
